Physical Activity for Diabetic Patients
Exercise is an essential part of diabetes management and complements medical treatment. There are various forms of physical activity that diabetic patients are encouraged to practice regularly.
Walking is considered the easiest, most affordable, and most important form of exercise for people with diabetes. It should become a regular part of daily life.
If you wish to participate in other types of physical activity, the following precautions should be observed:
1-Consult your healthcare provider to determine whether there are any specific restrictions or precautions related to the chosen activity.
1-Remember that consistent moderate exercise is more beneficial than occasional intense exercise. Start gradually and focus on maintaining regular activity.
3-Choose an appropriate insulin injection site before exercising. The abdominal wall is generally the preferred injection site.
4-The insulin dose administered before exercise may sometimes be reduced by a few units, as advised by your physician. However, insulin should always be taken at the prescribed time.
5-Eat a small carbohydrate-containing meal at least one hour before exercising.
6-If the exercise session is prolonged, consume a small carbohydrate snack during the activity to help prevent low blood sugar levels.
7-Make sure your exercise partners, friends, or colleagues know that you have diabetes and understand what to do if you experience hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
8-Be aware of the risk of delayed hypoglycemia, which may occur approximately 6 to 15 hours after physical activity.
